  13. Schema (JSON-LD)

You opened a funnel builder, stared at the blank canvas, and closed the tab. Three weeks later you still do not have a funnel, and the course you were going to sell is still a Google Doc.

To build a sales funnel step by step, create five pages in this order: an opt-in page that trades a freebie for an email, a sales page that makes the offer, an order bump on the checkout, a one-click upsell after the purchase, and a thank-you page that kicks off your email follow-up. Most beginners only need these five. Below is a real example plus the exact AI prompt to write each page.

What is a sales funnel? (And how is it different from a website?)

Website vs funnel: one button per page
Website vs funnel: one button per page

Website vs funnel: one button per page

A sales funnel is a short, linear path of pages that takes a stranger from "never heard of you" to "bought," one decision at a time, with no menu and no exits. A website lets people wander; a funnel removes every choice except the next one.

Definition: A sales funnel is a sequence of focused pages, usually opt-in, sales, order bump, upsell, and thank-you, each engineered to move the visitor toward a single next action and remove every other distraction.

That is the whole difference. Your website has a nav bar, a blog, an About page, and ten ways to leave. A funnel has one button per page. The reader either takes the next step or they do not, and you can see exactly where they drop. That clarity is what makes a funnel feel like it "works" when a homepage never did.

How many pages does a funnel actually need?

Sales funnel pages: 2-page versus 5-page funnel
Sales funnel pages: 2-page versus 5-page funnel

The minimal funnel: 2 pages free, 5 pages paid
The minimal funnel: 2 pages free, 5 pages paid

The minimal funnel: 2 pages free, 5 pages paid

Five pages for a paid offer, two for a free list-builder. You do not need fourteen pages, a quiz, and a webinar to start. You need an opt-in, a sales page, a checkout with a bump, an upsell, and a thank-you, and you can ship that this week.

Here is the honest version most "funnel hacking" content skips:

More on right-sizing this: How Many Pages Should a Sales Funnel Have.

The simple 5-page funnel (the diagram)

How to build a sales funnel: the 5-page funnel flow

The 5-page funnel, stranger to buyer

Picture five boxes left to right, each feeding the next. Opt-in page captures the email. Sales page makes the pitch. The checkout carries an order bump (a checkbox add-on before payment). After they pay, a one-click upsell offers the bigger thing. Then the thank-you page delivers the product and hands off to your email follow-up sequence.

[ OPT-IN ]  ->  [ SALES PAGE ]  ->  [ CHECKOUT + ORDER BUMP ]  ->  [ UPSELL ]  ->  [ THANK-YOU / EMAIL FOLLOW-UP ]
email the offer add-on at payment the bigger yes deliver + nurture

The money math is the reason all five exist. A reader who buys a $27 product, adds a $17 bump, and takes a $97 upsell just became a $141 customer instead of a $27 one, on the same ad click. The opt-in and the email follow-up are what let you sell to the large majority who did not buy today, typically the bulk of the people who land on the page. Now build each page, with the prompt.

Step 1: Build the opt-in page (the prompt)

Build the opt-in page first, because the email is the asset you keep even when nobody buys. Its only job is to trade something specific and instantly useful (a checklist, a template, a short guide) for an email address. One headline, three bullet benefits, one field, one button.

Keep it brutally simple. The fastest-converting opt-ins promise one concrete win, not "join my newsletter." "The 5-page funnel blueprint" usually beats "Marketing tips," because the reader can picture exactly what lands in their inbox.

Real example, before and after:

Before (vague, low opt-in): "Sign up for our newsletter to get updates and tips about marketing and funnels."

After (specific, high opt-in): "Get the 5-Page Funnel Blueprint. The exact opt-in, sales, bump, upsell, and thank-you pages, with the copy prompts to build each. Free PDF, no fluff."

The second one tells the reader what they get, why it is worth their email, and what format it arrives in. That is the whole game on an opt-in.

Copy-paste AI prompt for the opt-in page:

You are a direct-response conversion copywriter. Write an opt-in (lead magnet) page for [offer / lead magnet name] aimed at [audience].

Output, in order:
1. A headline that names the ONE specific result the freebie delivers (no "newsletter", no "tips")
2. A one-sentence subhead that says what it is and what format (PDF, checklist, swipe file)
3. Three benefit bullets, each starting with what the reader will be ABLE TO DO after using it
4. Button microcopy (3 to 5 words, action + outcome, e.g. "Send Me the Blueprint")
5. A one-line reassurance under the button (e.g. "Free. No spam. Unsubscribe anytime.")

Voice: [paste a 2-sentence sample of your writing here]
Plain, confident, specific. No hype, no em dashes, no "unlock" or "supercharge".

Step 2: Build the sales page (the prompt)

The sales page is where you make the actual offer, so it carries the most weight and follows a proven order: hook, problem, the offer and what is inside, proof, price, guarantee, and one CTA repeated. For a low-ticket product a short sales page (a long-scroll page, not a 90-minute VSL) is plenty.

Do not freestyle this. A sales page that converts has a structure, and skipping a section (usually the proof or the guarantee) is where beginners leak sales. We have a full walkthrough of the page itself in How to Write a Sales Page That Converts; the prompt below gives you the draft to edit.

Concrete example of the offer block (the section most people write weakest):

What you get inside the Funnel Blueprint Pack:
The 5 fill-in-the-blank page prompts ($97 value). The offer-stack worksheet that prices your bump and upsell ($47 value). Two real funnel teardowns, annotated ($30 value). Total value $174. Today: $27.

Notice it names each piece, assigns a value, stacks to a number, then drops the price. That anchor is what makes $27 feel like a steal instead of a random number.

Copy-paste AI prompt for the sales page:

You are a direct-response copywriter. Write a short-form (long-scroll) sales page for [offer] priced at [price], aimed at [audience].

Use this section order and label each section:
1. Hook: a pattern-interrupt opener tied to their #1 pain
2. Problem: name the specific frustration and the cost of it staying unsolved
3. The offer: introduce [offer] as the fix and the mechanism that makes it work
4. What's inside: itemize each component with a dollar value, stack to a total, then reveal the [price] (price anchoring)
5. Proof: [FLAG: INSERT REAL TESTIMONIAL OR RESULT HERE, do not fabricate]
6. Guarantee: a clear risk reversal (e.g. 30-day money-back)
7. CTA: one button, repeated after the offer and after the guarantee

Voice: [paste a 2-sentence sample of your writing here]
No hype, no fake scarcity, no em dashes. Specific over clever.

Step 3: Add the order bump (the prompt)

The order bump is a small checkbox add-on that sits on the checkout page, before payment, so the buyer can add it with one click while their card is already out. It should cost less than the main product (roughly $7 to $37 on a $27 core) and complete the thing they are already buying.

This is the highest-ROI 80 words you will write, because the reader is already in buying mode. In our experience a good bump often gets added by roughly 20% to 40% of buyers and costs you nothing extra in traffic. If you are fuzzy on how a bump differs from the upsell in step 4, read Order Bump vs Upsell and What Is an Order Bump.

Real bump example (annotated):

Yes, add the Swipe File ($17). Add my library of 12 proven opt-in headlines and 8 order-bump scripts you can paste straight into your funnel. One click, and you skip the blank page on every page you just learned to build.

It is one checkbox, names the price in the label, and frames the add-on as removing the next obvious friction (writing it all from scratch). Short, specific, low-risk.

Copy-paste AI prompt for the order bump:

You are a direct-response copywriter. Write order-bump copy for a checkbox add-on on the checkout page for [main offer].

The bump add-on is: [bump product] priced at [bump price] (must be lower than the main offer).

Output:
1. A checkbox label starting with "Yes," that names the add-on and the price in-line
2. 2 to 3 sentences (max 60 words) that frame the bump as completing or de-risking the purchase they're already making
3. End on the one-click ease ("just check the box")

Rules: it must feel like a natural next step, not a second pitch. No pressure, no fake urgency, no em dashes.
Voice: [paste a 2-sentence sample of your writing here]

Step 4: Build the upsell page (the prompt)

The upsell is a separate one-click page that appears immediately after the purchase, offering a bigger or faster version of what they just bought, for more money. Because their card is already charged, accepting is one click with no re-entry, which is why upsells can add 30% to 60% to your average order value.

The rule that makes upsells work: the upsell must be a logical next step, not a random second product. They bought the blueprint; the upsell is the done-for-you templates or the coaching that makes the blueprint faster. Same destination, higher speed.

Example upsell hook (annotated):

Wait, your order isn't finished. You just got the 5-page blueprint. Want the funnel already built? Add the Done-For-You Funnel Templates: five pages pre-written in our highest-converting structure, import-ready, so you launch this weekend instead of next month. Add it for $97. One click, no re-entering anything.

It opens with a pattern interrupt ("isn't finished"), ties directly to what they bought, sells speed over a new feature, and removes friction. That is the whole upsell formula.

Copy-paste AI prompt for the upsell page:

You are a direct-response copywriter. Write a one-click post-purchase UPSELL page for [upsell offer] priced at [upsell price], shown right after the customer buys [main offer].

Output:
1. A pattern-interrupt headline acknowledging the purchase isn't fully done (e.g. "Wait, your order isn't finished")
2. One sentence connecting the upsell DIRECTLY to what they just bought (it must be the logical next step, faster/bigger, not a new topic)
3. 2 to 3 benefit sentences selling SPEED or DONE-FOR-YOU, not new features
4. The price and a one-click "Yes, add it" CTA
5. A plain "No thanks" decline line under it (honest, no guilt-tripping)

No fake scarcity, no countdown gimmicks, no em dashes.
Voice: [paste a 2-sentence sample of your writing here]

Step 5: Build the thank-you page and email follow-up (the prompt)

The thank-you page confirms the order, delivers access, and tells the buyer exactly what to do next, while your email sequence starts working in the background to deliver value and sell to everyone who did not buy today. The page is the handoff; the emails are where most of the real revenue gets made over the following two weeks.

Most funnels die here by saying "Thanks, check your email" and stopping. Use this page to set the next action (log in, join the community, book the call) and let the automated emails carry the relationship. This is the step that turns a one-time sale into a list you can sell to for years.

The minimum email follow-up (3 emails):

  1. Delivery + quick win (immediately): here's your access, do this one thing first.
  2. Value email (day 2): teach something useful tied to the product, no pitch.
  3. Soft pitch (day 4): point them to the next logical offer or the community.

Copy-paste AI prompt for the thank-you page + email follow-up:

You are a direct-response copywriter. Write (A) a thank-you/confirmation page and (B) a 3-email follow-up sequence for buyers of [offer] aimed at [audience].

(A) Thank-you page:
- Confirm the order and reassure (their access is on the way)
- ONE clear next action (e.g. "log in here", "join the community", "watch module 1")
- A one-line "what happens next" so they're never confused

(B) 3-email sequence:
- Email 1 (immediate): deliver access + one quick win they can do in 5 minutes
- Email 2 (day 2): teach one genuinely useful thing related to [offer], zero pitch
- Email 3 (day 4): a soft pitch to [next offer or community], value-first

For each email give a subject line and the body.
Voice: [paste a 2-sentence sample of your writing here]
No hype, no em dashes, no "in conclusion". Write like a real operator, not a brand.

Can ChatGPT or Claude build a whole funnel for you?

How AI builds a funnel: one page at a time
How AI builds a funnel: one page at a time

How AI builds a funnel: one page at a time

Yes for the copy and structure, no for the wiring. AI will write every page above in minutes when you feed it the prompts and your real offer details. It cannot host the pages, take payment, or connect the upsell, that part lives in your funnel tool.

The honest split: AI handles the part that used to take days (the writing and the structure), and your builder handles the part that takes an afternoon (clicking the pages together). Run the five prompts in order, paste a two-sentence voice sample into each, drop in your real offer and prices, and you have a full funnel draft before lunch. One step before you ship: read each draft out loud and cut anything that sounds like a brand instead of you. Our walkthrough on how to write copy with AI without sounding like AI shows the exact pass.

Do I need ClickFunnels to build a sales funnel?

No. ClickFunnels is one option, not a requirement. Any tool that can host pages, take payment, add an order bump, fire a one-click upsell, and send automated email will run the five-page funnel above. Pick on price and what you already use, not on hype.

The five jobs your tool must do: host the pages, process the checkout, support an order bump, support a one-click post-purchase upsell, and trigger the email sequence. Plenty of platforms across price points cover all five (some bundle it, some you stitch together with a page builder plus a checkout plus an email tool). We break down the real trade-offs in Do I Need ClickFunnels. Build the funnel first; the tool is a swap-out, not the strategy.

From five pages to a funnel that compounds

You now have the whole simple funnel: the five pages, a real example for each, and the prompt to write it. Run the prompts, wire the pages, send traffic, then watch where people drop and fix that one page.

This is exactly what we build together inside Asset Academy. Members bring their offer, run these prompts on a live call, and get the funnel torn apart and rebuilt page by page with operators who ship real work every week. It is the practitioner shortcut, the difference between a funnel that sits in drafts and one that takes orders this weekend.

FAQ

How do I build a sales funnel step by step?
Build five pages in order: an opt-in page that trades a freebie for an email, a sales page that makes the offer, an order bump on the checkout, a one-click upsell after the purchase, and a thank-you page that triggers your email follow-up. Write each page with a focused AI prompt and your real offer details, then wire them together in any funnel tool that hosts pages, takes payment, and sends email.

How many pages should a sales funnel have?
Five pages for a paid-product funnel (opt-in, sales, order bump, upsell, thank-you) and two pages for a free list-building funnel (opt-in plus thank-you). Beginners do not need more than five. Add downsells, second upsells, and webinars only after the simple version is making money.

What is a simple sales funnel for beginners?
A simple sales funnel is an opt-in page, a sales page, a checkout with an order bump, a one-click upsell, and a thank-you page connected to an email sequence. It moves a visitor from email signup to purchase to a larger purchase, one decision per page, with no menu or distractions.

Can I build a sales funnel with AI?
Yes, AI can write all five funnel pages and the email follow-up when you give it the page structure, your offer specifics, and a two-sentence voice sample. AI handles the copy and structure; your funnel tool still handles hosting, payment, the upsell wiring, and sending the emails.

Do I need ClickFunnels to build a funnel?
No. ClickFunnels is one option among many. Any tool that hosts pages, processes a checkout, supports an order bump and a one-click upsell, and sends automated email can run a five-page funnel. Choose based on price and the tools you already use.

What is the difference between an order bump and an upsell?
An order bump is a small checkbox add-on on the checkout page, before payment; an upsell is a separate one-click offer shown after the purchase, usually for a larger amount. Bumps are pre-payment and low-priced; upsells are post-payment and sell the bigger, faster version of what they bought.
